Drag on a fuzzy ball in humid conditions stretches rallies, and every extra stroke is a metabolic bill somebody pays.
Heavy air makes the ball slower and the match longer
A tennis ball is unusually good at being slowed down. Fuzzy surface, low mass, big frontal area for its weight. Change the air it flies through and you change the sport played inside it.
Denser or heavier conditions increase the force resisting the ball, and because drag rises steeply with speed, the fastest shots lose the most. A serve arrives slower. A big forehand that would have flown through the court sits up and gets returned. The practical consequence is that on a heavy night, the shots that ended points at four in the afternoon no longer do, and rallies that were four strokes become nine.
Now do the physiology of that. A tennis point is a series of short bursts with brief recoveries, and the fuel for the first few seconds of each burst comes from a small store inside the muscle that refills only when you stop. Short rallies drain a little and the twenty five seconds between points refills most of it. Stretch every rally to nine or twelve strokes and the drain per point roughly doubles while the refill window stays exactly the same length. The deficit compounds across a set. Nobody feels it in game three. Everybody feels it at four all in the third.
The injury consequence follows the fatigue, and it is specific. What goes first in a tired player is not top speed but the ability to stop. Deceleration into a wide ball is produced by muscles working while being stretched, and those are the contractions that degrade earliest and most steeply under fatigue. Late in a long humid match you see players arrive at the ball a fraction late, decelerate a fraction poorly, and land in the awkward positions where ankles roll and hip and groin muscles strain.
So the conditions do not merely slow the tennis down. They redistribute where in the body the match is paid for, from the shoulder and the serve toward the legs and the changes of direction.
My argument is that we should stop talking about heavy conditions as if they favour defenders. They favour whoever can still brake in the third hour, which is a different quality entirely, and it is the one that disappears earliest in a player's thirties.
