Curators sample a surface that varies across its length and depth, then a broadcast reports the figure as though it described the whole strip.
A pitch moisture reading is one number from one spot at one hour
The probe goes in somewhere. That somewhere matters enormously.
A pitch is not uniform. Moisture varies along the length of the strip, across its width, and steeply with depth, and it varies with what the covers did overnight and where the shadow of the stand fell in the morning. A curator takes a reading, or several, and forms a judgement. That judgement is expert and largely sound. The number that escapes into the broadcast is something else: a single figure, quoted without location, depth or time, standing in for a surface that will change measurably in the next four hours.
Sampling is the entire issue and it is almost never discussed. If you take one core from the middle of the strip at nine in the morning, you have measured one point in a field of values, at one moment on a curve that is still falling. Report it to one decimal place and you have implied a precision that the sampling design cannot possibly support.
The relevant statistical idea here is that the variance within the pitch may be larger than the variance between the pitches you are comparing. When that is true, and I suspect it often is, differences between grounds reported from spot readings are mostly noise about where the probe went in.
Depth compounds it. Surface moisture governs what the ball does in the first hour. Moisture two or three centimetres down governs whether the pitch holds together on day four. Those are different variables with different consequences and they get collapsed into one word, damp, in every preview ever written.
What would be better is not complicated. Multiple readings at stated depths and stated positions, published as a range rather than a point, with the time of measurement attached. Curators already collect close to this. The reporting layer flattens it.
There is a fair objection that viewers do not want a table of soil readings during the toss. Agreed. But the alternative to detail is not a false single number, it is an honest qualitative statement, and curators give good ones when asked.
The habit of converting expert judgement into a spuriously precise figure does not add rigour. It launders an opinion into data and then invites everybody to argue about the second decimal place of something that was never measured that finely in the first place.
