Sliding on a hard court is a clay habit the surface will not honour
Watch a player slide into a wide ball on a hard court and notice how short the slide is. Half a metre, maybe less. That brevity is the whole problem.
On clay, the loose top layer shears under the shoe and the foot decelerates over a long distance. Spreading a stop over distance is spreading it over time, which lowers the peak force at every joint in the leg. It is the same principle as a longer runway. That is why clay players have fewer of certain impact injuries and why they can arrive at a ball off balance and still recover.
A hard court has no shear layer. The rubber sole grips the acrylic surface directly, and whether it slides at all depends on the exact texture of the paint, how dusty it is that day, how worn the shoe is, and how much of the sole is loaded. Those variables mean the friction is not merely high, it is inconsistent, and inconsistent is worse than high. A player who commits to a slide and finds grip stops in a fraction of the distance he planned for.
That is the injury moment. The upper body keeps travelling while the foot is pinned, so the knee is loaded sideways with the body rotating over it, which is the mechanism behind most non-contact knee ligament injuries in any sport. If the foot rolls instead, the outside of the ankle takes it. Neither is a freak event. Both are what happens when the deceleration you planned takes half the distance you expected.
The counter argument is that everyone slides now and the injury lists have not exploded, so it must be fine. I think the honest reading is that the elite have absorbed the risk through a decade of practising it, and they are also the ones with hips and knees that give out early. The technique migrated down to juniors and club players who learned it from television without the thousands of controlled repetitions underneath.
So the question to ask about a hard court is not how fast it plays. It is how predictably it lets a shoe go, because a surface that grips sometimes is more dangerous than one that never does.
