The most under-coached hour of the day is the scrimmage

Practice is scripted so tightly that the only segment where players make real decisions is the one nobody teaches inside.

Scripted five on none. Scripted five on zero with a walk through of the coverage. Sets called from the sideline, second unit runs the opponent's plays from cards. By the time the group finally scrimmages, everybody is tired, the clock says twelve minutes, and the coaching consists of shouting a score.

That last block is the only part of the day that resembles a game, and it is treated as a reward.

I want it treated as the main event. Not because scripting is bad, it is how you install anything at all, but because decision making is a trained skill and scripts remove decisions by design. A player who has spent four days executing called actions has not practised choosing an action, and choosing is what he will be asked to do at the end of the third quarter when the play breaks.

Coaching inside live play is harder than coaching a script and the difficulty is why it gets skipped. You cannot stop live basketball every thirty seconds without ruining the thing you are trying to build. So the tools are different. Constraint rules rather than instructions. No dribble beyond the arc for one block. Every possession has to touch the paint. Score counts double on a shot created by a second side. The constraint does the teaching, quietly, without the coach having to be the one making the read.

There is a cost worth stating. Constraint games produce ugly possessions and veteran players hate feeling stupid in front of the group, so the room needs to have some trust in it before this works. Introduce it in October, not in March.

The thing I would measure, if I were measuring anything, is how many possessions per week a given player finishes without an instruction having been shouted at him. For a lot of young rotation players in this league the honest number is close to zero, all year, and then in April someone in a meeting asks why he cannot play in the playoffs when the sets stop working.

Nobody ever let him try.
