A young player needs one teacher, not four opinions per week

Staff turnover and shared responsibility mean nobody owns a rookie's development, so he gets corrected constantly and taught rarely.

Ask who is responsible for a second year wing's shooting and you will get a name. Ask who was responsible last season and you will get a different name, because that coach took a job elsewhere in July, which is what coaches do. Ask who spoke to him about his footwork this week and you will get three names, none of whom have talked to each other.

That is the actual condition of player development in a lot of buildings, and it is worse than any individual coach's philosophy.

Teaching a motor skill is a sequence. You choose one thing, you accept that other things will get worse while it is being changed, and you hold your nerve for eight weeks. That plan only survives if one person owns it and everybody else in the building agrees to shut up. What happens instead is that the assistant who ran shooting has a view, the head coach has a different view from film, a consultant flies in for three days with a third view, and the player, who is twenty two and wants to please everyone, tries to satisfy all of them inside the same repetition.

The result looks like a player who cannot retain coaching. He retains it fine. He has been given contradictory instructions and is averaging them.

I would name one coach per developing player, in writing, with the authority to say no to other staff. Not a mentor in the vague sense. The person whose call it is. Everyone else routes suggestions through him, including the head coach, which is the clause that makes this hard to implement and is also the entire point.

The argument against is that a single voice can be a single wrong voice, and a player stuck with a coach who has one method loses a year. Real risk. It is smaller than the risk of four voices, because a wrong method applied consistently at least produces a legible failure you can diagnose in March.

Continuity is a resource and the league treats it as free. It is the only thing a rebuilding team has more of than a contender, and most of them spend it like it does not matter.
