Skill work scheduled last teaches a tired version of the skill

Individual sessions keep getting scheduled after lifting and team practice, which is the worst available slot for learning anything new.

Skill work scheduled last teaches a tired version of the skill

Look at how a practice day is built and you can see what the building actually values. Team work first, because everyone has to be there. Lift in the middle, because the strength staff have the room booked. Individual skill work at the end, when the floor is finally free and the player is on his fourth hour.

That ordering is convenient and it is upside down for anything you are trying to teach for the first time.

New motor patterns are acquired badly under fatigue. The nervous system substitutes. A tired shooter finds a way to get the ball to the rim that involves the shoulders, and repeats it two hundred times, and the version he has grooved is the compensation rather than the target. He is not lazy and he is not failing. He is doing what a tired body does, which is solve the problem with whatever is available.

There is a real place for fatigued skill work. Free throws late, decision making late, anything where the goal is to make an existing skill hold up under stress. That is a different objective from acquisition, and the distinction almost never gets made when the schedule is written. Everything after the lift is treated as one category called extra work.

I would flip it for anyone in a genuine rebuild of a mechanic. Fifteen minutes on the floor before the team session, fresh, low volume, high attention. Then let the rest of the day be the rest of the day. Fifteen good minutes beat ninety exhausted ones and they beat them badly.

The obstacle is not knowledge. Every performance director in the league understands this. The obstacle is that the gym is busy in the morning, the coach who runs the individual work is also running the team session, and asking a twenty year old to arrive ninety minutes early in February is a fight nobody wants.

Have the fight. The alternative is a player who has spent a season practising the thing you are trying to remove, and then everyone wonders why the change did not take.

Fatigue does not build character in a jump shot. It builds a different jump shot.
