Spin rate was a useful number for about five years.

It arrived as a diagnostic. Systems could count revolutions, higher counts tended to accompany more deviation off the surface, and here at last was an objective handle on something that had always been described in adjectives. Recruiters started asking for it. Academies started reporting it. Contracts, eventually, started referencing it.

Then the loop closed. Bowlers trained to raise the number, because the number was what got looked at, and it turns out you can raise revolutions per minute with grip and wrist changes that do not necessarily produce more useful deviation. Side spin and top spin both register. Only some axis orientations actually bite on a given surface. A bowler can add two hundred revolutions and gain nothing a batter would notice.

This is the oldest failure mode in measurement and sport keeps rediscovering it. A metric that works as a proxy while nobody is optimising for it becomes a bad proxy once everybody is. The correlation that justified the metric was observed in a population that was not trying to move it.

What I want instead is the axis, not just the magnitude. Rotation has direction, and direction decides whether revolutions convert into deviation where the ball meets the surface. That is measurable and much less often published, partly because it is harder to capture cleanly and partly because one number fits on a graphic and a vector does not.

There is a second reason the raw count misleads. Deviation depends on the surface, which means the same delivery is worth more on a dry, abrasive pitch than on a fresh one, and a rate figure aggregated across venues averages over the variable that controls the effect. You end up comparing bowlers on an input while pretending you compared them on an output.

I still think measurement was the right instinct. The alternative was scouts trusting their eyes, and eyes are worse than they feel. But the honest version of the claim was always narrow: among similar bowlers on similar surfaces, higher rates tend to accompany more turn. That is a hedged sentence, and hedged sentences do not survive contact with a recruitment meeting.

So the figure got stripped of its conditions and promoted to a standard, and now a generation of bowlers is being sorted by a proxy their own training has partly hollowed out.
