Watch the ugly ones again. A lot of the genuinely bad contact in loud stadiums happens a half second after the referee has already ended the passage of play.

The sequence is mechanical, and it is fast. A player committed to a tackle or a challenge is a mass moving at speed, and stopping that mass requires the whole braking chain to fire in order: hear the signal, recognise it, cancel the movement already programmed, then absorb the deceleration through the hip and knee. In a quiet training session that chain runs in a couple of hundred milliseconds. In an enclosed bowl at full volume, the first link is the one that breaks, because the whistle competes with a wall of crowd noise sitting across a broad slice of the same frequency range and bouncing back off a hard roof for a second or more afterwards.

Miss the whistle and the player does not brake. He arrives. The opponent, who did hear it because he happened to be facing the referee, has already relaxed. That asymmetry is the mechanism. An unbraced body absorbing a full speed contact loads joints in positions the muscles were not holding, and it is why the shoulder that dislocates or the knee that buckles so often belongs to the player who stopped, not the one who did not.

Reverberation makes this worse in a way that pure loudness does not. A long decay time smears the sharp onset of a whistle into the noise floor, and the onset is exactly the part the ear uses to pick a signal out of a crowd. Dampening panels, absorbent under-seat surfaces and broken roof geometry all shorten that decay. They also, unhelpfully for the people who commission them, make the ground sound less impressive on a broadcast.

So there is a real trade to argue about. Atmosphere sells tickets and television. A dead sounding bowl feels flat. But the noise that fans buy is also the noise that hides the one signal designed to stop bodies before they meet at speed.

I would take the flatter arena. Not because the crowd matters less, but because the whistle is the only piece of injury prevention equipment on the pitch that costs nothing and works instantly, and we keep building rooms that swallow it.
