A cricket pitch is prepared over days and sometimes weeks before a match begins. The decisions taken during that preparation shape the contest more than any field setting will.
Soil composition sets the ceiling
The clay content of the square determines how well a pitch binds together under stress. High clay content holds its shape and produces consistent bounce over a long match.
Lower clay content, or a soil with more sand, breaks up sooner. The surface then develops cracks and rough patches that give spin bowlers purchase later in the game.
Because soil is a long-term property of a ground rather than a weekly choice, venues acquire durable reputations. A curator can adjust behaviour at the margins but cannot change the underlying material.
Rolling compacts the surface
Heavy rolling presses the soil together, producing a harder and faster surface with truer bounce. It also delays the point at which the pitch begins to deteriorate.
The timing of rolling matters as much as its weight, because rolling damp soil binds it while rolling dry soil can loosen the top. Curators judge moisture carefully before each pass.
Teams may request rolling between innings within the rules, and the choice reveals intent. A side batting last generally wants the surface held together as long as possible.
Water content controls early behaviour
Moisture near the surface encourages seam movement, since the ball grips briefly on landing and deviates. It also keeps the pitch soft enough to hold together.
Withholding water produces a drier, more crumbly surface that assists spin from an early stage. The choice effectively decides which bowling type is favoured on the first day.
Weather then interacts with those decisions in ways nobody controls. An unexpectedly hot day can dry a pitch faster than intended and change its character entirely.
Grass cover does two jobs at once
Live grass binds the surface with its roots, slowing the rate at which a pitch breaks up. Removing it entirely accelerates deterioration considerably.
Grass also affects the ball directly, since a covered surface offers seam movement and preserves the shine. The two effects are distinct and are managed separately.
Curators therefore decide both how much grass remains and how much moisture it holds. The visible green tinge that commentators discuss is only the surface of that decision.
Why the toss carries so much weight
Because a prepared pitch changes predictably across days, batting first or last is a materially different task. The decision at the toss is an assessment of that trajectory.
Captains inspect the surface, press it, and consider the forecast before choosing. They are estimating how quickly the pitch will move from its early state to its final one.
Where deterioration is expected to be severe, batting first becomes strongly preferred. Where early moisture is the main hazard, bowling first can be the sounder choice.
