When rain shortens a limited-overs match, the revised target is rarely a simple proportion of the original score. The method values something less obvious than overs, and understanding it removes most of the confusion.
Two resources, not one
A batting side's ability to score depends on both the overs it has left and the wickets it still holds. Either alone gives an incomplete picture of its position.
A team with many overs and few wickets must bat cautiously, while a team with few overs and all its wickets can attack freely. The combination determines scoring capacity.
Rain adjustment methods therefore express a side's position as a single figure combining both. Interruptions are handled by comparing that figure before and after.
Why simple scaling fails
Reducing a target in proportion to lost overs ignores wickets entirely. A side chasing with all wickets intact would find a scaled target far too easy.
Scoring is also not spread evenly across an innings, since teams accelerate towards the close. The final overs contribute far more runs than the equivalent number in the middle.
Any fair method must account for that shape. Cutting overs from the end removes the most productive ones, so the reduction in target must be smaller than the reduction in overs.
How an interruption is processed
The calculation records how much capacity each side had available at the point play stopped and when it resumed. The difference is the capacity lost to the weather.
If the team batting second has less total capacity than the first, its target falls. If it has more, because overs were lost while it was fielding, the target rises.
Targets rising after rain surprises spectators but follows directly from the logic. A side told it will bat twenty overs rather than fifty can attack from the first ball.
The limits of the approach
The method rests on typical scoring patterns rather than on the specific match, so unusual conditions can produce results that feel wrong. A very slow pitch is not accounted for.
Very short revised matches are especially sensitive, since a handful of deliveries carries disproportionate weight. Competitions set minimum lengths below which no result is declared.
Refinements have been introduced over time to reflect changing scoring rates, particularly the higher totals now common. The underlying principle has stayed constant while the values have moved.
Why teams plan around it
Captains aware of forecast rain manage wickets deliberately, because holding them preserves capacity. Losing wickets cheaply damages a position even when the run rate looks healthy.
Sides chasing in uncertain weather often push to stay ahead of the required rate, since a match abandoned mid-innings is decided on the position at that moment.
The method thus shapes play rather than merely resolving it. Awareness of the calculation changes decisions long before any rain falls.
