A tournament draw is not random, and the departures from randomness are deliberate. Seeding exists to prevent an outcome that would damage both the competition and the event around it.
The problem seeding solves
In a purely random draw, the two strongest entrants could meet in the opening round. One would be eliminated immediately despite being among the best in the field.
That outcome weakens later rounds, since the remaining matches feature players who would not otherwise have reached them. The quality of the event declines as it progresses.
Seeding prevents this by placing the strongest entrants in separate parts of the bracket. They can only meet once most of the field has been eliminated.
How placement actually works
Seeds are ranked and then distributed so that the top two fall into opposite halves, the top four into separate quarters, and so on down the list.
Within those constraints, positions are drawn randomly. A player seeded fifth through eighth is allocated to a quarter by lot rather than by rank.
Unseeded entrants are then distributed across the remaining positions. The randomness is preserved wherever it does not conflict with the separation requirement.
Ranking is not the only input
Most events seed by ranking, but some adjust for surface-specific records where a global ranking poorly predicts performance. Grass-court events have historically used such adjustments.
Protected rankings allow players returning from long injury absences to enter at a level reflecting their previous standing. This prevents a returning player from disrupting early rounds.
Wild cards sit outside the system entirely and are unseeded regardless of ability. A highly capable wild card can therefore distort a section of the draw.
The commercial dimension
Tournaments sell tickets across many days, and an event losing its leading names early has weak later sessions. Seeding protects the value of those sessions.
Scheduling then builds on the draw, placing prominent matches in sessions with the largest audiences. The bracket structure and the timetable are planned together.
This is a genuine interest rather than a hidden one, and governing bodies acknowledge it openly. The mechanism is designed to serve competitive and commercial aims simultaneously.
Where the system is criticised
Seeding rewards past results, so a player in strong current form but low ranking receives no protection. Draws described as unbalanced usually arise this way.
Expanding the number of seeds spreads protection further but reduces early competitive variety. Governing bodies have moved the number up and down as that balance is debated.
The alternative of a fully random draw is rarely proposed seriously, because the cost is understood. The argument concerns how much structure to impose rather than whether to impose any.
