Clearance over the row in front is measurable
Designers use a value describing how far a spectator's sightline clears the head of the person in front. Larger values mean an unobstructed view even when others lean forward.
Achieving a generous value requires steeper tiers, since each row must sit higher relative to the last. The seating bowl becomes taller and more vertical.
Older grounds were built to shallower standards, which is why views from their lower rows are frequently blocked by movement in front. The deficiency is structural rather than incidental.
Distance and angle trade against each other
Seats close to the action offer detail but a narrow angle, so play at the far end is difficult to follow. The eye must track across a wide field.
Higher seats provide the full picture and reveal team shape, at the cost of individual detail. Neither position is objectively superior.
Optimum viewing is usually found partway up the side, where both detail and shape remain accessible. Pricing generally reflects that, though not always accurately.
Corners and ends have specific problems
Seats behind a goal compress the pitch visually, making it difficult to judge depth and the position of players relative to each other. Offside situations are particularly hard to read.
Corner positions suffer a version of the same problem across a diagonal. Both are typically priced lower for this reason.
They compensate in atmosphere, since these areas often host the most vocal supporters. Spectators trade viewing quality for a different experience deliberately.
Roof and structure create hidden obstructions
Roof edges can cut off the upper part of a view, which matters for high balls in some sports. The obstruction is invisible when the ground is empty and inspected from the pitch.
Supporting columns in older stands block portions of the pitch entirely. Modern designs use cantilevered roofs specifically to eliminate them.
Broadcast positions and safety equipment introduce further obstructions that vary by event. These are usually accounted for in ticketing but not always accurately.
Why newer grounds feel steeper
Contemporary designs push tiers upward to improve clearance values and bring spectators closer to the pitch. The result is a steeper, more enclosed bowl.
Regulations limit how steep seating may be for safety reasons, so designers work close to that limit. The characteristic feel of a modern stand comes from that constraint.
The improvement in sightlines is genuine and measurable. Complaints about atmosphere in newer grounds concern acoustics and layout rather than the quality of the view.
