An offside decision looks like a simple question of who is further forward. Producing an answer precise enough to overturn a goal involves several separate judgements, each carrying its own margin of error.
The moment of the pass must be fixed first
Offside is judged at the instant the ball is played, so the frame showing that instant has to be identified before any line is drawn. Everything else depends on that choice.
Cameras capture discrete frames rather than continuous motion, so the true moment usually falls between two of them. The operator selects the nearest frame, which is already an approximation.
Faster footage narrows the gap but never closes it. A ball travelling quickly moves a measurable distance between consecutive frames, which is where a portion of the uncertainty enters.
Choosing the relevant body parts
The comparison is between the attacker's furthest legal point and the same measure on the second-last defender. Arms and hands are excluded because they cannot legally score.
Identifying those points on a moving body from a two-dimensional image requires interpretation. A trailing knee or a leaning shoulder can be genuinely difficult to place.
Automated systems track many points on each player to reduce this judgement. They still require calibration and can be confused when players overlap or are partly obscured.
Correcting for the camera's view
A camera sees the pitch at an angle, so a line that is straight across the grass appears skewed on screen. Software must map the image back onto a model of the pitch.
That mapping relies on fixed reference marks, chiefly the pitch lines themselves. Where markings are worn or obscured by weather, the correction becomes less reliable.
The rendered line viewers see is a projection produced after that correction, not a measurement drawn directly on the picture. It illustrates a calculation rather than showing evidence.
Why the margin is set deliberately
Because each stage carries error, competitions define a tolerance within which the on-field decision stands. The tolerance is a policy choice about which mistakes are more acceptable.
A narrow tolerance catches more genuine offsides and overturns more goals by tiny amounts. A wider one preserves attacking play but allows some marginal offsides to stand.
Different competitions have settled on different balances, which is why identical incidents can be treated differently. The disagreement is about tolerance rather than about the rule.
What automation actually changed
Semi-automated systems mainly changed speed and consistency rather than accuracy. They remove the manual placement of lines, which was the slowest and most contested part.
Faster decisions matter because long delays damage the experience of watching. A verdict delivered in seconds interrupts far less than one requiring several minutes of review.
The underlying limits remain. Any system judging a continuous event from sampled images will produce close calls, and the rule's binary nature guarantees some will feel unjust.
