Growth plates are the weak link
Growing bones contain regions of cartilage near their ends where lengthening occurs. This cartilage is less resistant to force than the surrounding bone or the attached ligaments.
When force is applied across a joint, the growth region often fails before the ligament does. An injury that would sprain an adult can produce a bone injury in a child.
This is why practitioners assess young athletes differently after apparently minor incidents. The likely site of damage differs from the adult pattern.
Tendon attachment sites take repeated stress
Where tendons attach to growing bone, repetitive pulling can irritate the attachment. The resulting conditions typically appear during periods of rapid growth and active participation.
They are generally self-limiting and resolve as growth completes, but they can restrict activity for extended periods. Management focuses on modifying load rather than stopping entirely.
Because the pattern relates to growth timing, these problems appear at characteristic ages and often in athletes who have recently grown quickly.
Growth itself changes coordination
Rapid increases in limb length alter the body's proportions faster than movement patterns adapt. Coordination and balance can temporarily decline during growth spurts.
That period is associated with increased injury rates, since familiar movements are performed with an unfamiliar body. Training emphasis often shifts towards movement quality.
Strength typically develops after height, so a young athlete can be tall before being strong enough to control the new levers. The gap is temporary but relevant.
Specialisation concentrates the load
Playing one sport year-round exposes the same tissues to the same demands without variation. Overuse conditions are more common in specialised young athletes than in those who play several sports.
Varied activity distributes stress across different structures and develops broader movement competence. Many governing bodies now advise delaying specialisation for this reason.
Volume limits exist in some sports, particularly for throwing, and are set to limit cumulative exposure at vulnerable ages.
Why adult programmes transfer poorly
Training designed for mature athletes assumes closed growth plates and established movement patterns. Applying it directly to a growing athlete alters the risk profile.
Appropriate programmes account for maturation stage rather than chronological age, since children of the same age differ substantially in development.
Persistent pain in a young athlete, particularly near a joint, should be assessed by a qualified practitioner. Growth-related conditions require identification before activity is adjusted.
